Intellectual Property Protection in Southeast Asia --- View From Malaysia Firm ---- Overview of patent protection in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Indonesia will be explained. The Malaysian patent system has notable features such as novelty grace period, and subject matter exclusion. Some options for patent examination are available in Malaysia including a normal substantive examination, a modified substantive examination, and an expedited examination. Not only the JPO-MyIPO patent prosecution highway (PPH), but also ASEAN Patent Examination Cooperation (ASPEC) program is available. As you may know, the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) may serve as an International Searching Authority (ISA) and an International Preliminary Examining Authority (IPEA). Their searching and examining features may be discussed. As one of the developing countries, Malaysia may be place where design rights are well utilized. As always, trademark issues are quite hot in the Southeast countries. Overview of trademark practices in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Indonesia is explained. The seminar will be given in English.
